Procrastination is buying time to delay something that has to be done. There are three elements involved in procrastination: the task to be done, the person to do the task, and time.


Of the three, time is the major element referring to the importance and urgency of the task to be done.


Important concerns rouse your interest. When you are interested on a subject, you cannot wait to act on it. You cannot take it off your mind. Even if you are doing other things (like taking a shower, driving a car, working out on the gym, etc.), you cannot seem to get it off your mind. You do not stop until you have acted on the subject, acquired the results, and are satisfied with the outcome. Obviously, important and interesting concerns are not candidates for procrastination.


So what do you procrastinate on? These include the tasks you are not interested in, but are compelled to act upon. If you are uninterested on a task, you tend to delay working on it. The task may or may not necessarily be important to you.


Definitely, you procrastinate doing tasks that you truly dislike doing. In such case, wouldn’t it be more reasonable to delegate the job instead of personally attending to it? Sounds logical, isn’t it? Doing so immediately takes the task off the ‘To Do’ list.


If you cannot delegate a task to somebody else (say going to the dentist), still there is no reason to procrastinate. Seek out the benefits that you will get out of completing the task. This makes it easy for you to decide to act on it and not delay it further.


Typically, a lengthy ‘To Do’ list makes an individual more prone to procrastination. This also results to a mixture of slight guilt and low spirit. On the other hand, a shrinking ‘To Do’ list can make you feel light, enthusiastic, and high in spirit. Knowing this, is procrastinating justified?


Try these thoughts to stimulate your go-get-it-done attitude:


  • Manage your ‘To Do’ List. Keep it at manageable levels. Do not crowd tasks in just one day. Remember to be realistic when it comes to your schedules.


  • Keep a conscious effort to minimize the list of things you have to do. Whenever possible, integrate pending things to your daily chores. This way, you do not have to get out of your way just to finish things that are on your waiting list.


  • Imagine you are the thing or person on the waiting list. How would you feel if you were made to wait long in a queue? Keep this in mind as you glance on your ‘To Do’ list. You will feel a sense of urgency to complete the tasks.


  • Some of the tasks on the ‘To Do’ list are waiting for solutions. Be solution-focused. Widen your perspective and understanding on the issues involved. Do some researching and be willing to ask for advice.


  • Invasive criticism keeps you farther away from solutions. Focus on finding answers to things that you have to do. If you have to criticize, do it constructively, with solutions tailing behind.


  • Procrastinating can result to greater stress in your system. So why risk your health when you can avoid it?


You have yet to hear someone comment anything good or beneficial about procrastinating. If there is a person who will say anything favorable about procrastination, it’s Mr. Procrastination himself.
