Keep Your Cool during Arguments



Arguments bring out the worst in people. Sometimes, they spring from the pettiest discussions. Arguments are just discussions of issues between minds at cross-purposes. You would be defending your own beliefs and trying to disprove the other one’s point of view. Unfortunately, these discussions tend to escalate into a fight which really could threaten your relationship with the other person.


There are ways to handle arguments without you lashing out at the other person. Here are just a few of them to help you cope the next time you're in a heated discussion.


  • Take a step back from the situation. Figure out if it's really something worth arguing about. If you were only discussing your thoughts on a television show or if it all started from playful banter, don't let it get out of hand. Save your breath and energy for the bigger issues.


  • Think before you speak. A million hurtful and insulting things could be bubbling up in your throat and threatening to burst out of your mouth, but you don't have to let the dam break. You must keep cusswords and comments such as "That's a really stupid thing to say" at bay. You don't want to say anything you'll regret, especially if you deal with the person on a daily basis. You might be able to apologize once the whole thing blows over, but you can't take your words back. Remember the saying 'sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me'? As a matter of fact, words could be a thousand times more hurtful and will linger in people's minds. This might even cause further strain on your relationship.


  • Don't drag others into the argument. Unless there really are people supporting your views, don't force others to take sides. You're no longer a little kid trying to make people mad at the person you're angry with. Besides, if you're truly steadfast in your beliefs, you really don't need to have other people backing you up.


  • Remember that your point of view isn't the only one everyone should have. We're all entitled to our own opinions after all. Try not to impose your beliefs on the other person. If he is doing the same to you, take a deep breath and remember that you don't have to be swayed by them, no matter how strongly you feel against them.


Keep these in mind and you'll definitely be able to avoid future arguments from getting more serious.
